Residents of Netherlands received postcards with the smell of marijuana from Government
Dutch authorities sent the residents of Rotterdam and Hague, about 30,000 postcards with the smell of marijuana, to actively fight the violators.
Each postcard size 20 by 10 inches is painted in green and contains two strips with a special coating, if it is erased – you can feel the characteristic smell of marijuana. Next on the card are printed the police phone number and a note “Help us in the fight against cannabis plantations!”
According to a representative of the working group in charge of developing the project, its purpose – to inform citizens about the existence of illegal cannabis plantations and give them the tools with which they could identify them and report to the police.
This is a trial action and reaction of people will show, if there will be continued distribution to other cities.
Despite the fact that in 1976 the Netherlands have legalized the use of certain quantity of marijuana (less than 5 grams per person), the country has a huge number of illegal “farms”, where cannabis is grown. Often plantations are located in attics, basements, and warehouses and private homes. For personal use Dutch citizen is allowed to grow no more than five cannabis bushes.
Mass production of this plant is prohibited and is run by criminal organizations. Annual turnover of the shadow market of cannabinoids in the Netherlands is estimated at 1.7 million euros.
According to intelligence agencies, in the country, there are about 40,000 underground greenhouses, about six thousand are destroyed annually. Of these, approximately 300 plantations with 600 – 1000 plants were found in Rotterdam only.
